How much does it cost to rebuild a home?

A home is usually the largest investment an individual or family makes in their lifetime. To protect this investment, it is critical to make sure your home is properly insured. If you are thinking about rebuilding your home, you will need to determine how much insurance to purchase. To do this, you will want to estimate the total cost of the rebuild. We have a software tool to help out and find this number, and it takes into consideration the following factors:

  • Average area construction costs
  • Square footage of home, number of rooms, and number of floors
  • Exterior frame and wall materials
  • Roof type
  • Additional or unique features like arched doorways and windows, fireplaces, garages, or special exterior trim
  • The quality and type of materials and finishes used on (and in) the home

What items are typically not covered in my normal policy but can be added?

  • Sewer backup &/or Sump pump failure coverage
  • Sewer line that connects the house to the sewer main
    • Live in an area with larger trees with fully developed roots? It’s likely over time the root system has worked its way into the sewer line.
Replacing the line & drain tiles can be very costly (think backhoe).
  • Replacing non-damaged roofing or siding in order to get things to match
    • Hailstorm comes through and hits one side of your house. Good news is it’s likely the insurance company will replace those damaged shingles?
But what if the manufacturer no longer makes that brand (happens more than you might think). Or even if the brand is made with the weather/sun
fading all around the house it will not look great or match.
  • An outbuilding on some farm or hunting land that you own.
  • A smaller boat you might have at a lake house or use occasionally at your local public launch to do some fishing or have some family fun on the water.

How do I estimate the replacement costs of the contents of my home?

The loss of possessions due to theft or natural disaster can not only be emotionally devastating, but can also take a big toll on your financial wellness. However, if you have the right insurance coverage, you should be able to recoup or replace your belongings.

Best recommendation we have is to video walkthrough your home while using a smartphone or tablet. The recorded pictures or videos (with you talking over and describing rooms/items) can then be stored in your cloud. This would be far & away the most help to an adjuster in a claim and most importantly you – trying to remember all the items you had prior to a large loss can be difficult at that difficult time.

Is reimbursement available for additional living expenses incurred in the event of a covered loss?

If you can no longer live in your home due to a loss covered in your policy, we do cover living expenses, such as shelter and food, up to a certain amount or time period. Most times we can get you setup for one to two years until you are back in your home.

What type of losses does my homeowner’s insurance policy cover?

Most homeowners insurance policies cover a number of issues, including fire, tornadoes, hail, smoke, theft, vandalism, storm damage, and many more. However, there are limits on your policy, so be sure to consult with your agent in the event of a loss.
